About This Mid-Century Wooden Bed with Cane & Upholstered Headboard

Layered headboards (part woven cane, part upholstered panel) fail when the two sections are poorly proportioned. Too much upholstery and the cane becomes a narrow border that reads as trim. Too much cane and the upholstered section doesn't give enough support for reading in bed. This headboard has the proportions right: the mustard upholstered panel is the main backrest, and the cane sits above it to lighten the headboard without making it look insubstantial.

The mango wood frame runs underneath. Mango is a dense hardwood that holds the platform-height profile without requiring a central support rail. The joints at the headboard connection are mortise-and-tenon, which is the joint that distributes load across the wood grain rather than concentrating it at a screw or bolt. The upholstered panel sits on a solid wood backing, not MDF, so the padded shape holds over time without compressing.
